Started in 1983, the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial takes place every third Sunday in May. In 2012, the 29th Memorial took place on 20 May, with as theme ‘Promoting Health and Dignity Together”. In Beijing, the memorial was commemorated with an event organized by the Beijing Gender Health Education Institute and the China Rainbow Network. The event took place at UNICEF, and saw the participation of a multitude of media representatives, celebrities, social organizations and people living with HIV/AIDS.
The event also marked the official launch of the China AIDS Walk, a large-scale event which raises funds for social projects related to HIV/AIDS and which aims to reduce stigma & discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.
