Violence Against LGBT People – Homophobic / Transphobic Bullying in Schools
Film Screening + Discussion Event
In its most extreme form, homophobia & transphobia give rise to violence, a world-wide problem recognized by the UN. China has also seen its share of homophobic & transphobic violence, yet it has gone largely underreported. A particularly urgent problem consists of the mental and physical harassment or “bullying” of LGBT people in schools.
Join us for a night of film and discussion – get informed and take a stand against homophobia and transphobia!
Time: Saturday 9 June, 19.30 – 21.30
Place: Dongjen Book Club, No.18 Dashiqiao Hutong, Jiu Gulou Avenue, Xicheng District ,Beijing ,China
Entry: 10 RMB
We’ll start off with the screening of the documentary “Strong” (Queer Comrades, May 2012). With this film, Queer Comrades puts a human face on violence against LGBT people in China. It features Zhang Lingxuan, a young man from Fujian who was physically harassed in high school for being openly gay. He finds out how deep homophobia runs when he doesn’t get any support from the school authorities. Armed with an indestructible spirit, he courageously pursues his dreams and starts using his experience to raise LGBT awareness throughout China.
Afterwards, we’ll hold an informal discussion event hosted by Xiaogang Wei (Queer Comrades, “Strong” director) and Xu Bin (Common Language, researcher on domestic violence against LBT women). They’ll give some more insights into violence and bullying against LGBT people in China, and will engage the public in a discussion on how we can make things better.
