The French Embassy in China and Queer Comrades are holding an event in connection with the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) on Thursday 17 May, 14.00 – 18.00 pm.
IDAHO raises awareness of discrimination and challenges faced by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) people. Our theme this year is “Stop Violence Against LGBT – Fight Homophobia in and through education”. With the event, we focus on bringing attention to violence against LGBT people, particularly the mental and physical harassment or “bullying” of LGBT people in the educational system. Beyond the terrible impact bullying has on the children and students who are perceived as different, it creates generally unsafe, discriminatory, stigmatizing and violent school climates. These climates have proven to have very negative effects on the learning outcomes of ALL students, not only the bullied ones. It is therefore in the interest of all to reverse the situation and allow education systems to construct societies, which are inclusive of diversity and respectful of the individual.
We would like to invite you to attend this event to meet and interact with representatives of LGBT civil society organizations, educational professionals as well as the international community to explore these issues.
The event, hosted by the French Embassy, will take place at the Institut Français in Beijing. It will consist of a screening of the documentary “Strong – a documentary about violence against LGBT people” by the LGBT organization Queer Comrades, a panel discussion including Zhang Lingxuan (documentary main character) and LGBT activists Xu Bin (Common Language, researcher on domestic violence against LBT women) and Mian Liping (Aibai, researcher on sexual orientation – related bullying in schools). This will be followed by an informal networking event where you are encouraged to get to know the Beijing LGBT organizations. Documentary and panel discussion will be provided with Chinese – English subtitles and -translation respectively.
As seating is limited, please confirm your attendance by writing an email to info@queercomrades.com We look forward to meeting you and discussing your views and opinions in a safe and friendly environment.
Kind regards,
