Fulbright Law Professor James McGrath will describe the history of laws concerning Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) people in the United States, from their inception in ancient law through the present.  Because no social movement occurs in a vacuum, Professor McGrath will look at key moments in U.S. history and their effects on the laws that affected LGBTQ people.  Early laws concerning sexual minorities were based largely on the sexual conduct of people, as concepts of same sex intimacy were not well understood or tolerated for much of history.  As the LGBTQ communities became more visible, the struggle for tolerance became the quest for acceptance, and finally for full equal rights. Professor McGrath’s presentation ends with a snapshot of the laws concerning LGBTQ people of the fifty “United” States today.  Attending the presentation requires no previous study of the U.S. legal system.  A question and answer session will follow.
